Finding a decent meal in Locust used to mean driving to Concord, but that’s no longer the case. The town has quietly assembled a lineup that swings from smoky, char-edged al pastor at Isla Cancun to the kind of wings at Moochie’s Tavern that make you forget the live music.

I even spent a surprisingly pleasant hour in a dental office here, which tells you something about the service standards. You want a reliable pizza or a pitcher of margaritas that arrives without fuss?

The answers are on this list.

Highlights
House-brewed ale worth trying
Homemade chili and coleslaw
Hot, seasoned French fries
Warm, personable service
Clean, well-run establishment

I stopped into The Brew Room Locust on a Tuesday afternoon, and the place runs like a well-oiled machine. The house-brewed ale is worth your attention, though I found myself equally distracted by the homemade chili and coleslaw. The French fries arrive hot and heavily seasoned, which is exactly how fries should be treated. Service is warm without being performative, and the whole establishment feels clean and orderly. It is the sort of place where you can sit, eat, and not worry about a thing. I left satisfied.

Highlights
Fast, friendly, attentive service
Smoky, perfectly cooked asada
Best al pastor in NC
Fresh, refreshing cantaloupe agua fresca
Hot food, properly prepared

Isla Cancun Tacos operates with a speed that suggests they have done this before. The asada came out smoky and cooked precisely, with that charred edge that makes you pause mid-conversation. Their al pastor is the best I have had in North Carolina, and I say that with some reluctance because I generally distrust superlatives. The cantaloupe agua fresca was fresh and refreshing, a cool counterpoint to the heat. Everything arrived hot and properly prepared. Service was fast, friendly, and attentive without hovering. I have no complaints.

Best salsa and queso
Generous portions, fair prices
Attentive, friendly table service
Quiet, pleasant dining atmosphere
Top-shelf margarita pitchers

Mi Fuente Fresh Mexican Grill earns its place on this list for the salsa and queso alone. The salsa has a brightness that most places miss, and the queso is creamy without being heavy. Portions are generous, and the prices feel fair, which is becoming rare. The table service is attentive and friendly, though not intrusive. The dining room is quiet and pleasant, making it a good spot for conversation. If you are inclined, the margarita pitchers are top-shelf. I ordered one, and I did not regret it.

Boba Cafe is a spotless, well-maintained space that invites you to linger. The counter service is friendly and courteous, and the prices remain affordable despite the general trend of inflation. I tried their yogurt boba, which is a unique offering that I have not seen elsewhere. The texture is pleasant, and the flavor is subtle. They have games and seating that encourage you to stay a while, which I did. It is a simple place, but it does what it does well. I appreciated the calm.

Highlights
Hot, fresh, tasty food
Perfectly crispy, fluffy fries
Gator bites worth repeat visits
Large TVs with game access
Spacious patio and seating

Tailgators Sports Grill is the kind of place where the food arrives hot, fresh, and tasty. The fries are perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, which is a combination that is harder to find than it should be. The gator bites are worth repeated visits, and I say that without irony. There are large TVs with game access, so you can watch something while you eat. The patio is spacious, and the seating is comfortable. I went for the food, but I stayed for the atmosphere. It works.

Best pizza in area
Friendly, attentive staff
Excellent garlic knots
Great lunch special value

Emricci Pizzeria serves the best pizza in the area, and I have checked enough places to know. The crust has a proper chew, and the sauce is balanced. The garlic knots are excellent, soft and buttery with just enough garlic. The staff are friendly and attentive, which adds to the experience. The lunch special is a great value, so you can get a solid meal without breaking the bank. I went on a weekday and left feeling that I had found a reliable spot. It is worth the trip.

D'Anna's Kitchen offers a welcome that feels rare these days. The service is genuinely warm, and the portions are generous without being wasteful. The food is satisfying, the kind of meal that sticks with you in a good way. When an issue came up with my order, the manager resolved it promptly and without fuss. That level of responsiveness is uncommon. I left thinking that this is a place worth returning to every other weekend, which is exactly what I plan to do. It is simple, but it works.

Highlights
Decent sushi, fair price
Pickup service was smooth
Rice texture needs work

Roll and Bowl is a serviceable option for sushi, and the price is fair for what you get. The pickup process was smooth, which is more than I can say for some places. The sushi itself is decent, though the rice texture needs work. It was a bit mushy, which detracted from the overall experience. That said, the fish was fresh enough, and the rolls held together reasonably well. If you are in a hurry and need a sushi fix, this will do. It is not memorable, but it is not bad either.

Best BBQ around
Fresh, delicious sandwiches
Amazing signature sauce
Exceptional customer service

Sarlie's BBQ is the best barbecue around, and I do not say that lightly. The sandwiches are fresh and delicious, with a smoke flavor that comes through clearly. The signature sauce is amazing, tangy with a hint of sweetness that complements the meat rather than overpowering it. The customer service is exceptional, friendly and efficient. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a side, and both were gone before I knew it. If you are looking for barbecue in Locust, this is the place. I will be back.

Exceptional weekend emergency care
Proactive treatment prevents problems
Kind, gentle, highly attentive staff
Spotless, modern, peaceful clinic
Warm welcome from start to finish

Martin and Brune Dentistry is not a restaurant, but I would be remiss not to mention it. I had a dental emergency on a weekend, and they provided exceptional care. The staff are kind, gentle, and highly attentive, which is not what you expect from a dental office. The clinic is spotless, modern, and peaceful, with a warm welcome from start to finish. Their proactive treatment prevented a bigger problem, and I am grateful for that. If you need a dentist, this is the one. I will return for my next checkup.

Saturday: 5 AM–11 PM
Highlights
Consistent order accuracy failures
Friendly but unreliable service
Slow wait for wrong chicken
Skip unless you enjoy disappointment

Bojangles is a place I want to like, but they make it difficult. My last three visits have resulted in order accuracy failures, and the wait for the wrong chicken is slow. The staff are friendly enough, but friendly does not compensate for a missing biscuit or a swapped order. The food itself, when it arrives correctly, is fine, but the inconsistency is frustrating. I would skip this location unless you enjoy disappointment. I have decided to take my business elsewhere, which is a shame because the potential is there.

Blackened chicken wrap praised
Steak special with risotto
Outstanding wings and sampler

Moochie's Tavern is the kind of place that rewards repeat visits. On Friday nights, they have live music, which adds a lively energy without overwhelming the conversation. The bartenders are attentive and quick, so you never wait long for a drink. I tried the blackened chicken wrap, which was praised by a friend, and it lived up to the reputation. The steak special with risotto is a solid choice, and the wings and sampler are outstanding. It is a tavern that takes its food seriously. I will be back for the music and the wings.
